Dato' Sri. Prof, DR Tahir, MBA - Co-Chair

Dato’ Sri Prof. Dr. Tahir, MBA, and his son Jonathan Tahir are Co-Chairs of Tahir Foundation.

Dr. Tahir, the Founder of Mayapada Group, has been inspired by an old saying that states: “Every crisis brings its own opportunity.” A self-made entrepreneur with experience in banking, textiles and automotive industries since the early 1980s, he has over the last three decades built the Mayapada Group, a consortium of businesses in banking, insurance, healthcare, retail, real estate development and media. A devoted Christian, Dr. Tahir believes that a business must have strong leadership, a long-term vision, and an emphasis on stability and sustainability.

PT Bank Mayapada Internasional, Tbk (known as ‘Bank Mayapada’) is the flagship business of the Mayapada Group. Bank Mayapada is a publicly listed company with shareholders consisting of investors from the United States and Singapore, and has nearly two hundred branches throughout Indonesia.

Dr. Tahir has been featured as one of the 50 Most Successful Overseas Chinese Citizens in the National Archives of the Republic of China, and was awarded with the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2011. He is regularly listed as one of Indonesia’s wealthiest by numerous publications including Forbes. Dr. Tahir holds many other positions, such as Senior Advisor at the Coordinating Ministry for People’s Welfare, Chairman of the Association of Chinese Indonesian Society and Entrepreneurs (PERMIT), and Chairman of Chamber of Commerce at Chinese Committee (KIKT). He is also the first Asian to sit on the board of trustees at the University of California, Berkeley.

An avid sportsman, Dr. Tahir is also the Chairman of the Executive Board of Indonesian Table Tennis Association (PB PTMSI) and South East Asia Table Tennis Association (SEATTA), and is a black belter in karate.

Dr. Tahir is committed to giving back to society, and is the first Indonesian signatory of the Buffett-Gates Giving Pledge. His guiding principle “Built by the society for the society” has played a major role in the phenomenal growth of his businesses, and drives his generous philanthropic contributions through the Tahir Foundation, which has supported various initiatives in healthcare, education, legal reformation, and most recently made a $200 million investment (in partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) to address healthcare issues in Indonesia.

Dr. Tahir was awarded with the honorary degree of “Dato’ Sri” from Sultan Pahang of Malaysia for his various contributions to the society, and was recognized by Singapore’s Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew for his extensive contributions to education.

Jonathan Tahir - Co-Chair

Jonathan is Deputy Chairman at Mayapada Group, which has interests in banking, insurance, healthcare, retail, real estate development and media. He is also the Chairman of Mayapada Hospital, a luxury hospital chain in Indonesia that operates 2 hospitals and 6 clinics; and Chairman of Forbes Indonesia and MYP Ltd, a publicly listed company in Singapore that invests in real estate in the region. Jonathan received his Bachelor’s degree from the National University of Singapore in 2009.

Jonathan Tahir and his father, Dato’ Sri Prof. Dr. Tahir, are Co-Chairs of Tahir Foundation. Together, they lead the foundation’s efforts in improving the lives of Indonesians by providing access to adequate healthcare and education; and serve as catalysts in developing and nurturing the growth of a community of generous donors committed to the improvement of the lives of the underprivileged in Indonesia.

Yuliana, MAcc. - Chief Executive Officer

Yuliana, MAcc is Tahir Foundation’s Chief Executive Officer overseeing all foundation operations, grantmaking, partnership management, financials, and communications. She began her career at PT. Tata Guna Sarana Efek, then PT. Topas Multi Securities as Finance Director. Since 2007, she has been serving as Commissioner of PT. Topas Multi Finance. She graduated from University of Southern California, USA with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting in 1995 and Master of Accounting degree in 1996.

Ir. Wong Budi Setiawan - Board Member

Ir. Wong Budi Setiawan is a permanent board member of the Mayapada Group. After receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Universitas Kristen Petra, Surabaya and Master of Management from Universitas Indonesia, Jakarta, he started working at Mayapada Group in 1999. Since then, he has progressed to the President Director role in PT Sona Topas Tourism Industry, Tbk and taken on the position of President Commissioner of PT Zurich Topas Life.

Currently a board member at Tahir Foundation, Ir. Wong Budi Setiawan was chairman of Yayasan Dia Mengasihi (Tahir Foundation) from 2004 – 2009. He has played an important role in supporting the privately-funded charity of Dato Sri Prof. DR. Tahir, MBA.
